A pediatric transport medicine curriculum designed to extend beyond hospital walls
Our
Mission
Our mission is to improve patient safety during medical transport. To support that goal, we provide access to free, adaptable, reliable educational materials. We hope this curriculum empowers pediatric training programs to implement and expand transport medicine training opportunities for their trainees.
Transport Medicine
-
Transport medicine encompasses all aspects of patient care during transfer between healthcare facilities.
In brief, it is the often complex process getting patients to the right place, in the right time period, by the right people, using the right transportation modality
-
The transport of critically ill children and neonates is essential to current practice. Approximately 18% of pediatric admissions are via interfacility transport (Steiner et al., 2019)
Further, teams trained in pediatric transport have have improved patient outcomes.
Despite the identified need, there is a general lack of exposure to transport during residency and fellowship. Training on this topic is critical to patient safety.
-
A 2013 American Academy of Pediatrics consensus statement suggested that training in transport medicine is essential.
This curriculum was initially developed for Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine fellows in order to meet new PHM core competencies. However, we feel that this content is applicable to many training programs.
Specifically, the curriculum may benefit:
Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellows
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Fellows
Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Fellows
Pediatric Residents
Medical Students
Transport teams including registered nurses, advanced practice providers, and respiratory therapists
