Curriculum Development

This curriculum was initially developed to:

  1. Address core competencies in pediatric interfacility transport for PHM fellowship programs

  2. Provide a framework to guide the implementation of an educational experience in transport medicine.

Piloted at both Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and University of California San Diego, we incorporated multiple educational modalities including simulation, role play, real de-identified cases, self-directed learning, and interactive sessions.

We utilized Kerns 6 steps of curriculum development and continue to improve the experience based on fellow feedback. Results to date suggest that learners find this training valuable and applicable to their careers.

Models of Implementation

Our transport curriculum is very extensive since we serve as the medical control physicians and the rest of the curriculum (didactics and experiences) are built around this fact. With the high volume of transports and outside admissions that we get, I think we get a very robust and well-rounded experience.

The curriculum is designed to be flexible and can be structured as a short-term immersive rotation, or as a longitudinal program incorporated throughout training.

Our hope is that this website provides the tools to easily implement a transport medicine elective in any program. We encourage users to mix and match materials to meet the needs of their trainees!
